Ultima Markets Daily Market Insights – March 18, 2026
The waiting game officially ends today. Global markets face the ultimate volatility catalyst as the Federal Reserve concludes its highly anticipated two-day policy meeting.
Traders fully expect the Fed to hold interest rates steady. Therefore, the market directs its entire focus toward the Summary of Economic Projections (SEP)—specifically, the updated “Dot Plot.” With the Bank of Japan (BoJ) also looming tomorrow, currency pairs like USD/JPY are trading on a knife’s edge, elevating the risk of sudden intervention.
The FOMC Preview: Decoding the Dot Plot
The Federal Reserve will almost certainly hold rates at their current restrictive levels today. The true market mover lies entirely in the Fed’s forward guidance.
Last week’s sticky inflation data and surging oil prices completely crushed the market’s dovish hopes. Futures currently price in a maximum of only one rate cut for the entirety of 2026. Today, investors demand to know if the Fed agrees. If the updated Dot Plot confirms this aggressive “Higher for Longer” reality, it validates the recent hawkish repricing across global markets.
Fed Meeting Probabilities in 2026 | Source: CME Group
According to the CME FedWatch Tool, the futures market currently sees at most only one rate cut in late 2026, or potentially none at all. This hawkish shift is what has driven the recent surge in both the US Dollar and Treasury yields.
US Dollar Impact: Hawkish Hold or Dovish Surprise?
Heading into the rate decision, the US Dollar maintains a powerful structural advantage. The baseline scenario looks generally positive for the Greenback, assuming the Fed officially removes its previous projections for multiple rate cuts.
However, uncertainty still lingers. If Chairman Jerome Powell surprises the market by maintaining a neutral or less hawkish bias, such as hinting that the Fed still plans multiple cuts in 2026 despite recent inflation hiccups—the Dollar will face an immediate and violent sell-off.
USDX, H4 Chart | Ultima Markets MT5
The US Dollar Index (USDX) coils tightly just below the massive 100.00 psychological resistance ceiling. Buyers continue to aggressively defend the 99.30 near-term support zone.
If the Fed delivers a hawkish Dot Plot, expect bulls to retest or event shatter the 100.00 barrier, unleashing a massive breakout. Conversely, a dovish surprise will instantly reject this ceiling, sending the index plunging back toward the 98.50 support floor.
Gold Outlook: The $5,000 Battleground
Gold traders are holding their breath. The precious metal sits squarely at a massive psychological inflection point, caught between surging US Treasury yields and persistent stagflation fears.
XAUUSD, H1 Chart | Ultima Markets MT5
Consistent with our analysis yesterday, Gold (XAUUSD) continues to aggressively test the $5,000 major support level. A supercharged US Dollar following a hawkish Fed will likely push the metal decisively below this floor, opening the trapdoor toward the $4,880 – $4,800 major support zones.
However, if Powell delivers a dovish shock, Gold will catch an immediate bid. Bulls will use the $5,000 level as a launchpad to aggressively squeeze short sellers and push prices back toward $5,200.
For the near-term, 5035-4975 would be the intraday key level to watch.
USD/JPY in Focus: The Intervention Threat
While the Fed dominates today’s headlines, the Bank of Japan (BoJ) takes the stage tomorrow. This back-to-back central bank gauntlet makes USD/JPY the most dangerous currency pair on the board right now.
USDJPY, Daily Chart | Ultima Markets MT5
USD/JPY grinds relentlessly higher, applying massive pressure to the 159-160 resistance zone or key psychological level or even a intervention risk zone
If a hawkish Fed spikes US yields today, USD/JPY will naturally be pushed even higher. However, this creates a massive risk for traders. As the pair climbs, the likelihood that the Ministry of Finance (MoF) and the BoJ will deploy direct FX intervention to rescue the Yen grows significantly. Traders must exercise extreme caution when going long at these elevated levels ahead of tomorrow’s BoJ decision.
What to Watch Today
FOMC Rate Decision & Economic Projections (2:00 PM ET): The main event. Ignore the actual rate decision (expected hold) and immediately look at the Dot Plot. Fewer projected rate cuts for 2026 equal a stronger Dollar and weaker Equities.
FOMC Press Conference (2:30 PM ET): Chairman Jerome Powell takes the podium. Markets will hang on his every word regarding the labor market and energy-driven inflation. His tone will dictate the market’s closing direction.
Pre-BoJ Jitters (Late US Session): As the dust settles from the Fed, Asian session traders will immediately pivot to position for Thursday’s BoJ meeting. Expect erratic, illiquid swings in all JPY pairs heading into the daily close.
