FOMC Confirms ‘Higher for Longer’; All Eyes Pivot to the BoJ
FOMC Confirms ‘Higher for Longer’; All Eyes Pivot to the BoJ

Ultima Markets Daily Market Insights – March 19, 2026
The Federal Reserve has officially spoken, and the message was loud and clear: relief is not coming anytime soon. Global markets are aggressively repricing this morning after the FOMC delivered a hawkish reality check, confirming that interest rates will remain restrictive for the foreseeable future.
With the US Dollar surging and global equities taking a hit, the volatility baton now passes directly to the Bank of Japan (BoJ). As the Yen hovers dangerously close to intervention territory, today promises to be another highly explosive session across the forex and equity boards.
FOMC Recap: Dot Plot Validates the Hawks
As universally expected, Chairman Jerome Powell and the Federal Reserve held interest rates steady on Wednesday. However, the true shockwave came from the updated Summary of Economic Projections (the “Dot Plot”).
Fed Dot Plot on March 2026 | Source: Federal Reserve
Validating the market’s worst fears regarding sticky inflation and the recent oil shock, the Fed officially dialed back its rate-cut and inflation projections in its latest Summary of Economic Projections:
Median dot now signaling a maximum of only one cut for the entirety of 2026.
Core PCE Price Index forecast for 2026 raised to 2.7% (vs. prior 2.4%).
Powell’s press conference further cemented this hawkish stance, emphasizing that the central bank needs substantially more evidence that inflation is cooling before easing policy.
US Dollar Impact: The Greenback surged on the news. The confirmation of a sustained yield advantage triggered massive capital inflows, allowing the US Dollar Index (USDX) to once again retest the massive 100.00 psychological resistance ceiling.

The US Dollar Index (USDX) has once again regained the 100.00 level. However, this major psychological barrier continues to act as heavy resistance against a broader breakout.
If near-term post-FOMC momentum cannot force a clear breakout, the Dollar could face persistent resistance, requiring bulls to take more time to clear it. In the near term, as long as the Dollar holds above the 99.35 support floor, it maintains a bullish outlook.
BoJ Preview: The Yen’s Last Stand?
With the Fed out of the way and the US Dollar supercharged, the spotlight shifts entirely to the Asian session. The Bank of Japan is set to announce its policy decision today, and the timing could not be more critical.
Driven by the expanding US-Japan yield gap, USD/JPY has been pushed to absolute extremes. The pair is currently trading in the highly sensitive 159.00 – 160.00 zone—a level that has historically triggered aggressive pushback from Japanese authorities.
Today, the BoJ faces a massive dilemma: they must either deliver a hawkish rate hike to organically support the Yen, or the Ministry of Finance (MoF) will be forced to step in with direct, physical FX intervention to stop the bleeding.
USDJPY, H4 Chart | Ultima Markets MT5
SD/JPY is trading on a knife’s edge just below the 160.00 psychological barrier. If the BoJ maintains its ultra-loose policy today and disappoints the hawks, expect a violent spike above 160.00.
However, traders must exercise extreme caution—a break of this level significantly elevates the risk of sudden, multi-hundred-pip intervention sweeps by the MoF to punish Yen short-sellers.
Technically, a breakdown below the 159.00 level would signal a lack of bullish momentum, potentially leading to a short-term corrective move for USD/JPY.
What’s Next for Global Equities?
The stock market is nursing a severe hangover this morning. The Fed’s hawkish Dot Plot was exactly what Wall Street did not want to see.
Global equities are now officially trapped in the “Dual Risk” environment we have been tracking. Corporate valuations are being squeezed by stubbornly high borrowing costs, while simultaneously facing the threat of slowing consumer demand and high energy prices (Stagflation).
SP500, Daily Chart | Ultima Markets MT5
The S&P 500 took a direct hit following the FOMC press conference, heavily rejecting the 6700-resistance zone that we covered earlier.
The index is now sliding back toward its critical 200-day moving average support near 6620. If the reality of “Higher for Longer” continues to sink in, a breakdown below this moving average could trigger a wave of algorithmic selling, exposing the broader equity market to a much deeper structural correction toward the 6500 level.
What to Watch Today
Bank of Japan (BoJ) Rate Decision & Press Conference (Asian Session): The undisputed main event for today. Expect massive, erratic volatility across all JPY pairs. A hawkish shift will crush USD/JPY, while a dovish hold will likely test the MoF’s willingness to intervene.
US Initial Jobless Claims (8:30 AM ET): Following the Fed’s decision, the market will aggressively scrutinize the labor market. A sudden spike in unemployment claims, combined with the Fed’s refusal to cut rates, will rapidly accelerate stagflation fears and drive further equity sell-offs.
Post-Fed Repositioning (All Day): Watch how the European and US cash sessions digest the Fed’s reality check. If the US Dollar sustains its breakout above 100.00 throughout the day, it will confirm a major structural shift in global capital flows.
