Yen Surges on BOJ Intervention; Dollar Slips as Momentum Fades

Ultima Markets Daily Market Insights – 4 May 2026

Global markets are opening the new trading week with a sharp focus on the massive volatility in the foreign exchange space. Following the profoundly hawkish Federal Reserve decision last week, Japanese authorities finally drew a line in the sand, aggressively intervening in the currency market to prop up the embattled Yen.

This sudden influx of Yen-buying has sent shockwaves through the broader markets, causing the US Dollar to slip from its recent highs as traders digest the threat of further official action amid thin holiday liquidity.

Bank of Japan Intervention: The 160.00 Line in the Sand

The highly anticipated intervention from the Japanese government and the Bank of Japan (BOJ) finally materialised late last week. After USD/JPY violently breached the monumental 160.00 barrier, Japanese authorities conducted a massive Yen-buying and Dollar-selling operation.

Market estimates suggest the BOJ deployed roughly 5 to 6 trillion Yen to combat the rapid depreciation. This aggressive action yielded immediate results, forcing the Dollar to plummet from its peak above 160.50 down to the 155.00 to 156.00 zone.

Furthermore, Japan’s top currency diplomat, Atsushi Mimura, escalated the rhetoric by issuing a “final evacuation advisory” specifically targeting speculative traders.

What is Next for the Yen Today?

The Japanese Yen is now officially on high-alert intervention watch. Traders must remain hyper-vigilant, especially as Japan is currently in the middle of its holiday period.

During this time, trading volumes in Tokyo are exceptionally thin, making the market highly susceptible to outsized price swings and providing the perfect environment for the BOJ to conduct further high-impact interventions. If USD/JPY begins to aggressively retrace back towards the 158.00 or 160.00 levels, expect continuous and unannounced resistance from the Ministry of Finance.

USDJPY Outlook

Looking at USD/JPY, after prolonged consolidation and a brief post-FOMC breakout above 160.00, the pair quickly experienced a sharp sell-off, highly indicative of BOJ intervention.

Technically, with the sell-off pushing through the 158.00 support range, the structure suggests a potential reversal. However, the question remains whether the intervention can sustain this bearish momentum.

Hence, in the near term, traders should watch to see if any retest of the 158.00 level can hold as resistance; if it does, it will likely set the stage for a further bearish move in the pair.

EURJPY Outlook

Meanwhile, Yen cross pairs are also in focus. EUR/JPY experienced a major sell-off as well, but technically, we have yet to see a definitive bearish reversal.

For EUR/JPY, the pullback below the 186.00 mark suggests that bulls may be exhausted, but for bears to truly take control, we need to see a clear break below the recent support level of 182.00. In the near term, monitor for prolonged consolidation within the 186.00 – 182.00 range, keeping a close eye on any potential breakdown of that lower support.

US Dollar Index Outlook: Why Did the Dollar Slip Last Week?

Turning to the Dollar, the broader US Dollar Index (USDX) experienced a notable pullback to close out the week, slipping down to the major 98.00 level. Despite the undeniably hawkish tone from the Federal Reserve, the greenback was forcefully dragged lower by the BOJ’s massive Dollar-selling intervention, alongside underlying structural weakness in the Dollar itself.

This aggressive dumping of Dollars by Japanese authorities triggered a wave of profit-taking across other major currency pairs and weighed heavily on the Dollar Index.

From a technical and seasonal perspective, the Dollar is facing a complex landscape. While May is historically a mixed month for currency performance, the primary risk to the Dollar right now is the looming threat of continued BOJ intervention dumping more US currency onto the open market.

However, the underlying macroeconomic fundamentals—specifically the Fed’s “higher for longer” stance on interest rates—remain firmly supportive of the greenback. Therefore, while the Dollar may face near-term, intervention-driven weakness or consolidation, a complete structural collapse is unlikely unless US economic data suddenly deteriorates. This places immense focus on the upcoming US Non-Farm Payrolls (NFP) data this coming Friday.

Technically, the 97.60 – 98.00 zone remains a crucial support area where the Dollar is likely to see a technical rebound. If looking at the Dollar’s recent trend, the sustained pressure below the 98.70 – 99.00 resistance zone validates the broader downtrend setup. Meanwhile, examining the 4-hour chart, the multiple moving averages are forming a bearish crossover, which further confirms this bearish structure.

In the near term, any rebound is likely to be capped below these multiple moving averages for the Dollar Index.

Market Outlook Summary

In summary, the currency market has been violently reset by the Bank of Japan’s multi-trillion Yen intervention. By aggressively defending the 160.00 barrier, Japanese authorities have forced the US Dollar to slip from its post-FOMC highs.

As we navigate the thin liquidity of Japan’s holiday season, the Yen remains on strict intervention watch. While the Dollar Index has pulled back due to this official Dollar-selling, its underlying fundamental strength remains anchored by the hawkish Federal Reserve, setting the stage for a tense battle between central bank policy, key economic data, and direct market intervention.

What to Watch Today

  • Yen Intervention Threats (All Day): Traders will actively monitor USD/JPY price action. Any rapid appreciation towards the 158.00 level could trigger a second wave of Yen-buying from the BOJ.
  • US Macroeconomic Data (US Session): Following last week’s Fed decision, any incoming US economic data will be fiercely parsed to see if it supports the “higher for longer” narrative or provides an excuse for the Dollar to weaken further.
