US CPI in Focus: Dollar Facing a Tough Test?

shawn

Ultima Markets Daily Market Insights – March 11, 2026

After a wild week dominated by Middle Eastern war headlines and extreme energy market volatility, global investors are rapidly shifting their focus back to the US macroeconomic reality. Today, all eyes are locked on the US Consumer Price Index (CPI) report.

Following last week’s shocking Non-Farm Payrolls (NFP) contraction (-92K jobs), the stakes for today’s inflation data could not be higher. The market is increasingly fearful of “Stagflation”—a toxic mix of a shrinking economy and surging prices driven by the recent oil shock. Interestingly, this macroeconomic tightrope has placed the US Dollar in a highly vulnerable “lose-lose” position heading into the data release.

US CPI Preview: The Stagflation Litmus Test

The recent geopolitical chaos effectively masked the severe deterioration in the US labor market. However, with crude oil prices still sitting at elevated levels due to the ongoing threat to the Strait of Hormuz, the market is bracing for sticky inflation.

Today’s CPI print is the ultimate litmus test for the Federal Reserve. The central bank is currently trapped: they need to cut interest rates to rescue the labor market and stimulate growth if it continues to show sluggish signs, but they cannot do so if inflation remains stubbornly high.

Hence, today’s February CPI is the market’s primary focus. Although it does not yet reflect the March inflation spike driven by the Iran war oil surge, it provides crucial baseline clues; if February’s inflation is already running hot, the March data will be even worse.

The US Dollar’s Dilemma: A Lose-Lose Scenario?

Historically, high inflation boosts the US Dollar because it forces the Fed to raise interest rates. However, the current macroeconomic landscape has flipped this dynamic on its head, leaving the Greenback highly vulnerable regardless of today’s outcome:

  • High CPI (The Stagflation Panic): If inflation comes in hotter than expected, it further amplifies the “Stagflation” nightmare. A trapped Fed, a shrinking labor market, and soaring consumer costs will severely erode confidence in the US economy. Instead of chasing yields, capital is likely to flee the Dollar to hedge against currency debasement and economic stagnation.
  • Low CPI (The Rate Cut Green Light): If inflation drops significantly, it gives the Federal Reserve more room to cut rates to prevent a full-blown recession (as signaled by the negative NFP print). This would instantly strip the Dollar of its interest rate advantage, triggering a broad sell-off.

Hence, the outlook for the Dollar currently resembles a “lose-lose” situation. Still, this outlines the worst-case macroeconomic theory, and we must closely monitor how the market actually reacts to the print.

US Dollar Outlook

USDX, H4 Chart | Ultima Markets MT5

USDX, H4 Chart | Ultima Markets MT5

From a technical perspective, the US Dollar Index (USDX) has lost its bullish momentum, rejecting the 99.30 resistance ceiling earlier this week. It is currently drifting lower toward the 98.80 support zone.

A weak reaction to today’s CPI could force a definitive breakdown below this floor, confirming a bearish structural shift. Technically, the 98.60 – 98.80 zone acts as critical support for now; a break below this opens the door to further downside.

Meanwhile, we need to see a clear break back above the 99.00 level to validate any extension of the Dollar’s bullish run.

EUR/USD & GBP/USD: Reversal Patterns Emerging

With the US Dollar facing fundamental headwinds, major European currencies are beginning to show technical signs of life. After weeks of relentless downward pressure, both the Euro and the Pound are carving out potential reversal structures.

On the daily chart, EUR/USD is testing its 200-day moving average, which perfectly aligns with the major psychological support level near 1.1600.

In the near term, the 4-hour chart is setting up a potential bullish reversal pattern right at this 1.1600 support—specifically, an inverse head-and-shoulders formation. If the 1.1600 level holds and validates this bullish structure, the upside will likely extend in the near term as the Dollar weakens.

Similar to the Euro, the British Pound has found a solid floor. GBP/USD is heavily rejecting further downside near the 1.3350 major support zone. The pair is currently consolidating, building a double bottom pattern on the 4-hour chart ahead of a potential upside breakout.

Technically, a push above the immediate 1.3410 neckline could spark a rapid short-covering rally toward the 1.3500 – 1.3600 levels, provided the US Dollar weakens.

What to Watch Today

  • US Consumer Price Index (CPI) (8:30 AM ET): The undisputed main event. Watch both the Headline and Core MoM/YoY figures closely. Volatility will be extreme across the FX majors, Gold, and US Equities the second this data drops.
  • Geopolitical Undercurrents (All Day): While macro data is back in the driver’s seat, the Middle East remains a wildcard. Any sudden news of military escalation or disruptions to global oil supplies will instantly re-inject the war premium into the market, potentially scrambling the post-CPI price action.
